PA Licensure Compact

The PA Licensure Compact is an interstate occupational licensure compact for physician assistants (PAs). The compact provides a streamlined process via a compact privilege for PAs to practice in other compact member states without the need to obtain multiple state licenses. States join the compact by legislatively enacting the model compact legislation.

Adopt the PA Compact in Iowa

The Compact Does:

  • Make it easier for patients to access a provider, including through telemedicine
  • Reduce delays in providing care by eliminating administrative burdens
  • Allow IA to attract and retain a PA workforce due to license portability and supports relocating military spouses.
  • Improve continuity of care when patients or PAs relocate

The Compact Does Not:

  • Change the scope of practice for PAs in Iowa
  • Prevent Iowa from enforcing its own regulations on the PA profession
  • Prevent Iowa from taking disciplinary action against a PA
  • Change the licensing or continuing education requirements for Iowa PAs

*PAs practicing under a compact privilege must follow the laws, regulations and scope of practice rules of the state where patient care is delivered.
